Review – Hunters: Battle for the Arena by Mark Oshiro

Cover for "Hunters: Battle for the Arena" showing the main character Rieve surrounded by other game characters such as Imara Vex, Grozz and Utooni, behind them, the arena is displayed.

“Hunters: Battle for the Arena” is a novel by Mark Oshiro, tie-in to the game Star Wars: Hunters, a 4 vs 4 fast-paced battle game. I was really curious how they were going to explain the game and it is really a good setup.

Sometime after the Empire’s fall, a Hutt has purchased an entire planet and setup a sports complex including a battle arena and Huttball fields. The main character of the novel, a woman named Rieve, has just arrived to Vespaara, trying to find a new life after leaving Corellia and Nar Shadaa. She is somewhat Force-sensitive and receives an old lightsaber from the arena manager.

At first her impulsiveness and lack of focus gets her in bad standing with her fellow arena hunters. Little by little we see improvement and a glimpse to her past.

Finally, what she has been running away catches up with her on the Hutt planet, and she will have to learn to trust if she wants to confront her past.

It is a very standard novel, predictable albeit entertaining, and new Star Wars sports are always welcome, such as Huttball.
