Review – Convergence by Zoraida Córdova

Cover for "Star Wars The High Republic: Convergence" by Zoraida Cordova, depicting Jedi Knight Gella Nattai, a young woman with long flowing hair, wearing formal Jedi robes and blanding her two purple lightsabers, in the background a blue and yellow planet showing some cliffs.

Star Wars The High Republic solidifies the second phase of the publishing phenomenon with the first adult novel of the current phase: “Convergence” by Zoraida Córdova. The novel focuses on the Forever War, a conflict between neighboring planets Eiram and E’ronoh, that have caused decades of suffering in both planets and now affects the Galactic Republic’s efforts to expand their borders.

Captain of a starfighter squadron and also Princess and Heir to the throne of E’ronoh, flies through a simple mission which is complicated by the sudden appearance of Jedi AND Republic starships, so she tumbles and crashes into the planet of her enemies. There she is rescued by Phan-Tu Zenn, heir to the Eiram queen, and together they will try to forge a lasting peace.

Helped by Jedi Gella Nattai and the capricious and duplicitous Axel Greylark, son of one of the Republic Chancellors, they will embark on a tour to provide help and restore the faith in their governments, all this while resolving conflicts with unhappy factions and a sneakier, darker group that has their own plans for the galaxy.

The book picks up steam almost halfway and weaves a good mystery with surprising revelations about the characters, but the story falls short in terms of the galactic scale or the overall plot of The High Republic.
